Influenced by his family’s entrepreneurial spirit, Ugo developed a strong work ethic and a love for travel. At 16, after overcoming a brain tumor that took him to Paris for treatment, he joined his father’s textile business. By 19, he was expanding the company’s international markets and traveling globally.

Ugo’s career led him and his family to live in Paris and later New Jersey, where he worked in the textile and fashion industry. Always seeking new challenges, he eventually moved to Hong Kong to start a sourcing company. There, he met Anne, his life partner and now wife. They returned to southern France in 2016.

Following his father’s passing in 2019, Ugo inherited a large ranch in Argentina. In 2023, he and his son Francesco founded RIFORESTANDO, a reforestation and carbon sequestration project. By planting eucalyptus and pine trees on the ranch and using advanced tracking technologies, they offer European companies a transparent way to offset their carbon emissions.

Now at 58, Ugo combines his extensive professional experience with his passion for the environment, aiming to create a meaningful legacy that benefits the planet and future generations. This episode is special as it highlights entrepreneurship focused on sustainability—our first “green” episode. This is part two, of a four part series (Entrepreneurship.AU Startup Series) where I talk to startups ‘in flight’ where they are navigating growth and in some cases the chasm of doom.

I met with the extraordinary Paz Pisarski in July(2024) when she took me through the beginnings of the Community Collective (TCC) specialising in helping organisations build communities as part of their marketing and community engagement strategies. In this episode we discuss what’s happened in the last four months with TCC, and how Paz has been trying to achieve her goals, track meaningful metrics and navigating uncertainty.

All entrepreneurs have unique characteristics that set them apart, and Paz is definitely that. She brings her ‘A’ game to every conversation and delivered some powerful insights and wisdom, decades beyond her years.

I think this was the the most fun I’ve had recording since I started the podcast.

#027 Anthony ‘Harry’ Moffit – What the SAS and Entrepreneurship have in common.

Here is my discussion with Anthony Moffit, aka Harry. I call him Tony.

Tony is a mate from my time in the Australian Army. We were both posted to the SASR in the late 1980s; he went, I didn’t.

Tony served with distinction in several operational environments, including Iraq and Afghanistan. He spent 25 years with the SAS as an operative and Team Commander.

Tony transitioned from the SASR in his late forties and is now a Psychologist and Managing Director at Stotan Group and the Mission Critical Teams Institute. He is a best-selling author who recently released his memoir Eleven Bats: combat, cricket, and the SAS and is currently writing his next book on human performance. He is also the lead singer and songwriter with the rock band The Externals, who are abo to return to the stage (Info is available on our website).

You would be right in asking what a SAS guy is doing on an entrepreneurship podcast and what this has to do with Entrepreneurship. Well, the answer is everything. Like Special Forces work, entrepreneurship is about a clear mission, solving problems, and turning towards danger/risk when you would rather not. It is about capability, teamwork, knowing who you can rely on, and what happens when things go south. It’s also about novel and creative thinking and punching above your weight.

Ian McGregor is a stalwart of the market research industry in Australia. He established McGregor Marketing in 1976, making it one of the pioneers in qualitative research in the country. Along with his wife and co-director Karen, Ian led McGregor Marketing to become Australia’s sixth-largest market research firm and the first to secure work via a website in 1996.

Originally from Cornwall, UK, Ian’s career began in investment banking. His determination and adaptability led him to transition to the marketing industry, a move that took him to Adelaide, South Australia, for a work assignment. Falling in love with the country, Ian and Karen decided to settle there and started McGregor Marketing, which they operated for many years. In 2001, they sold the business and retired. Ian, still in his 50s, then enjoyed a stellar run as an investor, surpassing the earnings from his business.

Ian and Karen are dear friends, having known them for nearly 30 years as clients, suppliers, mentors, and advisors.

An understated man, they don’t make them like Ian anymore.

In this episode, I discuss Erik Zimmerman’s remarkable journey. Influenced by his psychologist mother and futurist father, who profoundly impacted my own entrepreneurial philosophy, Erik has developed a keen understanding of human behaviour and business innovation.

Erik’s entrepreneurial journey was sparked in 2006 after viewing “A Crude Awakening” at the Melbourne Film Festival. This experience led him to found Rezeko Pty Ltd, a renewable energy company later acquired by AGL in 2011. His commitment to sustainable solutions continued with his investment in Echo Group Corporation Pty Ltd, focusing on energy efficiency and solar technologies, which was acquired by Energy Australia in 2019.

As CEO of Sitetech Solutions, Erik oversees operations that support over 2,850 building sites across Victoria with pioneering fencing and safety technologies, including the exclusive E Bracket, Kingfence, and Fence-Lok systems. He is also a major shareholder and Director of the upcoming Edutech startup Alcazar, which will launch in mid-2024, and a foundation investor in Treecoin.

David is CEO and co-founder of Privacy Lock, a pioneering company that offers privacy-compliant solutions to banks and financial institutions. Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, David also contributes to the broader privacy community. He chairs the Colorado Privacy Policy Commission and is an active member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Afreen Huq is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the School of Management at RMIT University, Australia. Afreen’s research explores how gender identity and socio-cultural factors influence women’s entrepreneurial behaviour and approach to growth. She studies this phenomenon on women entrepreneurs in both developed countries as well as in culturally restrictive societies. Afreen is also interested in exploring identity reconstruction, socialisation, and resilience of migrant and refugee women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs who have social outsider status.Afreen also studies how curriculum innovation in entrepreneurship education can enhance graduate employability. Hi, I'm Peter Christo, the host of entrepreneurship.au.I want to introduce you to this podcast, and to do that, it is important to clarify what I mean by entrepreneur and entrepreneurship.The lens I look at entrepreneurship through includes inventive people building businesses, corporate venturing but 'out of necessity' innovative thinking, and the power dynamics, policy and programs and macroeconomic forces entrepreneurs need to navigate.For me, the art of entrepreneurship is a meld of hard-core skills, wisdom blended with grit to deliver an alchemy of sorts, where lead (ideas) are turned into gold (sellable products and services solving real problems). Of course, there is a material reward at stake, but we humans are motivated by intensives, and in general, these are to improve our station in wealth, power and influence.This podcast is a forum for discussion and discourse in an attempt to reveal the truth in the world of entrepreneurial endeavour. Not all is as it should be. Sometimes, the market for ideas, innovations and capital is corrupted, and the best ideas and intentions are not always the beneficiaries. There is a saying that "it's the pioneers are the ones who take the arrows",.. I've seen this again and again. Nichola Tesla is an excellent example of that.Sometimes, however, extraordinary ideas and businesses become incredible enterprises with bigger balance sheets than many countries.
